“Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.”
Context:The book of Joshua is the sixth book of the Old Testament and recounts the events following the death of Moses. Joshua, who had been appointed by God, was about to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after their forty years of wilderness wanderings.
Strength and Courage:The verse begins with the exhortation, “Be strong and of a good courage.” Joshua, as the successor of Moses, faced the tremendous responsibility of leading the Israelites in the conquest of the land of Canaan. These words of encouragement were given to him by God to instill strength and courage in his heart.
God’s Promise:The verse continues, “for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.” God reminds Joshua of the divine promise made to the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, that He would give their descendants the land of Canaan as their inheritance. Joshua’s role was to lead the Israelites in the fulfillment of this promise.
The Inheritance:The land of Canaan held great significance for the Israelites. It represented the fulfilment of God’s covenant with their forefathers and symbolised the blessings, prosperity, and security that would come from dwelling in the land God had promised them. The division of the land would provide each tribe with its own inheritance.
Lessons for us today:
- Trust in God’s promises:Just as God assured Joshua of the land, He has made promises to His people today. We can trust in His faithfulness and rely on His promises in our lives.
- Take courage and be strong:Joshua’s task was not an easy one, but God’s encouragement to be strong and courageous reminds us that we can face challenges and trials with confidence, knowing that God is with us.
- Leadership:Joshua’s leadership example teaches us the importance of leading with strength and courage, relying on God’s guidance and promises. Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, we can follow Joshua’s example of faithful leadership.
In summary, Joshua 1:6 highlights the importance of strength, courage, and trust in God’s promises. It reminds us to be strong and courageous in fulfilling the tasks and challenges set before us, knowing that God is faithful and will lead us to the fulfilment of His promises.
