Joshua 10:13

Posted on 2 October 2024
Listen to this article

"And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."

Context and Background:Joshua 10 recounts the battle of the Israelites against the Amorite kings. Joshua and the Israelite army were engaged in a fierce battle, and Joshua called upon the Lord for assistance. In response to Joshua’s prayer, God performed a miraculous act by causing the sun and the moon to stand still. This extraordinary event gave the Israelites more daylight to secure their victory over their enemies.

Significance of the Sun and Moon Standing Still:The stopping of the sun and moon in their courses was an exceptional demonstration of God’s power and intervention on behalf of His people. It allowed the Israelites to gain a significant advantage in battle. The fact that this event is recorded in the Bible shows God’s sovereignty over nature and His ability to suspend natural laws to accomplish His purposes.

Reference to the Book of Jasher:In Joshua 10:13, it mentions that this account of the sun and moon standing still is also written in the "Book of Jasher." The Book of Jasher is not part of the canonical Scriptures, but it is mentioned twice in the Old Testament (Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18). The Book of Jasher is an ancient Hebrew text that is not included in the Bible, and its contents are not available to us today. However, it appears that Joshua’s statement is referencing an existing historical record or chronicle that provided additional details about this remarkable event.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God’s Power and Sovereignty:The sun and moon standing still demonstrate God’s authority over creation. It reminds us that nothing is impossible for God, and He can intervene in extraordinary ways to fulfill His purposes.
  • God’s Faithfulness:The sun and moon standing still showed God’s faithfulness to His promises and His people. Joshua had faith in God’s ability to help them, and God honored that faith by granting a miraculous intervention.
  • Prayer and Dependence on God:Joshua’s prayer in the midst of the battle reveals the importance of seeking God’s guidance and intervention. It teaches us to rely on God’s wisdom, strength, and power rather than relying solely on our own abilities.
  • Historical Records and Faith:The reference to the Book of Jasher highlights the existence of additional historical accounts that may have complemented the biblical narrative. While the Book of Jasher is not included in the canon of Scripture, it serves as a reminder that historical records can provide further insights into biblical events and affirm the historical reliability of the Bible.

Overall, Joshua 10:13 showcases God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of His people and reinforces the importance of trust and dependence on God in the face of overwhelming challenges.
