Listen to this article

“So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.”

This verse is part of the account of the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua.

In this particular verse, Joshua is mentioned as he, along with the people of war and the mighty men of valor, ascends from Gilgal.

Let’s delve deeper into the historical and contextual significance of this verse.

Joshua 10:7 takes place during the time when the Israelites were engaged in battle against the Amorite kings.

The Amorite kings had formed a coalition against Joshua and the Israelites, as they feared the advancing Israelite army.

However, Joshua and his troops were determined to fulfil God’s command to possess the land.

Gilgal was an important location in the early stages of Israel’s conquest. It served as the Israelites’ base camp and was also where the Israelite males were circumcised as a sign of their covenant with God (Joshua 5:2-9).

After their camp at Gilgal, Joshua and his army moved out to engage in battle against the Amorite kings.

The phrase “all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor” emphasizes the unity and strength of the Israelite army under Joshua’s leadership.

It indicates that Joshua had the support and loyalty of his fellow warriors, who were skilled and courageous in battle.

The people of war and the mighty men of valor were instrumental in carrying out God’s plan for the conquest of Canaan.

From a spiritual perspective, Joshua 10:7 highlights the importance of unity, courage, and obedience in carrying out God’s purposes.

Joshua’s ascent from Gilgal represents his readiness to lead the Israelites into battle, trusting in God’s guidance and promises.

The people of war and the mighty men of valor symbolize the collective commitment of the Israelites to fulfil their divine calling and possess the land God had promised to them.

Overall, Joshua 10:7 captures a significant moment in the Israelite conquest of Canaan, showcasing Joshua’s leadership and the dedication of the Israelite warriors.

It encourages us to be steadfast and courageous in fulfilling God’s purposes, relying on His strength and remaining united in the face of challenges.
