Joshua 13:5

Listen to this article

“And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baal-gad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.”

Context: Joshua 13 marks the point in Israel’s history where the division of the Promised Land was being allotted among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joshua, as the leader of the Israelites, received instructions from God regarding the land distribution. In this verse, the focus is on the land that still remained to be conquered and allocated.

The land of the Giblites: The Giblites were inhabitants of the city of Gebal (also known as Byblos), which was located on the Mediterranean coast. This region was designated for the tribe of Asher (Joshua 19:29).

All Lebanon: Lebanon refers to the mountainous region north of Israel, known for its cedar trees and its connection to the Phoenician civilisation. This region was assigned to the tribe of Asher as well (Joshua 19:30).

Baalgad and Mount Hermon: Baalgad was a city located near the foot of Mount Hermon, which is the highest mountain in the region. This area was part of the territory given to the tribe of Dan (Joshua 19:47).

Entering into Hamath: Hamath was a city located in northern Syria, near the Orontes River. It is mentioned several times in the Old Testament as a significant city within the land of Canaan. Hamath marked the northern boundary of the land that would be allotted to Israel (Numbers 34:8).

God’s faithfulness: This verse highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. The distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel demonstrates God’s commitment to fulfill His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:7; 13:14-15; 15:18-21).

God’s sovereignty: The division of the land was not left to human discretion but was determined by God. It emphasises God’s authority over the inheritance of His people and reminds us of the importance of seeking His guidance and following His plans in our lives.

Completing the task: Joshua 13:5 highlights the areas that were yet to be conquered and allocated. It serves as a reminder that even after victories and achievements, there are still challenges to overcome. It encourages perseverance, determination, and a steadfast commitment to fulfilling God’s purposes.

Overall, Joshua 13:5 underscores the ongoing process of the Israelites’ possession of the Promised Land and emphasises the faithfulness and sovereignty of God throughout this journey. It also encourages believers today to trust in God’s promises, seek His guidance, and persistently pursue His purposes in their lives.
