Joshua 14:10

Posted on 8 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the Lord spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old.”

Context:Joshua 14 is part of the narrative of the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. In this chapter, Caleb, one of the spies who explored the land of Canaan with Joshua, approaches Joshua to claim the inheritance that was promised to him by Moses. The verse in question is part of Caleb’s speech as he recounts God’s faithfulness and his own longevity.

God’s faithfulness:Caleb acknowledges God’s faithfulness in keeping him alive for forty-five years since the time God made a promise to him through Moses. Caleb had been among the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan (Numbers 13). While the other spies brought back a discouraging report, Caleb and Joshua had faith that God would give them victory and enable them to possess the land. Because of their faith, God promised that Caleb and Joshua would enter the land and inherit it.

Wilderness wandering:Caleb refers to the forty-five years of wandering in the wilderness. After the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, they spent forty years wandering in the wilderness due to their disobedience and lack of faith. During this time, the generation that doubted God’s promise died out, but Caleb and Joshua, because of their faith, were preserved to enter the Promised Land.

Caleb’s age:Caleb states that he is eighty-five years old at this point. This reveals the remarkable longevity of Caleb. Despite the hardships and challenges faced during the wilderness journey and the conquest of Canaan, Caleb remained faithful and strong in his old age.

Lessons from Caleb:Caleb’s story teaches us several important lessons:

  • Faithfulness and trust in God:Caleb’s unwavering faith in God’s promises and his trust in His faithfulness are exemplary. He believed that God would fulfill His promise and give them the land, even when others doubted.
  • Patience and perseverance:Caleb waited for forty-five years to see God’s promise fulfilled. He did not lose hope or give up during the long years of wandering in the wilderness.
  • Active participation:Caleb actively sought his inheritance and was not content to simply wait for it to be given to him. He approached Joshua and reminded him of the promise made by Moses, asserting his rightful claim.
  • Strength and vitality in old age:Caleb’s physical strength and vigor at eighty-five years old highlight the blessings that come from a life lived in faithful obedience to God.

In conclusion, Joshua 14:10 reminds us of God’s faithfulness, the importance of faith, patience, perseverance, active participation, and the blessings that come from a life lived in obedience to God. Caleb’s example encourages us to trust in God’s promises, regardless of the circumstances, and to remain faithful and devoted to Him throughout our lives.
