Joshua 14:4

Listen to this article

“For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance.”

Context:The book of Joshua is part of the Old Testament and records the events following the death of Moses. Joshua, Moses’ successor, leads the Israelites into the promised land of Canaan. The verse in question comes from a section where the land is being divided among the tribes of Israel as an inheritance.

The Children of Joseph:The verse mentions the children of Joseph, who were Manasseh and Ephraim. Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (also known as Israel), received a double portion of the inheritance since his two sons became separate tribes. This is because Joseph’s father, Jacob, adopted his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, as his own (Genesis 48:5).

Levites:The Levites were a tribe set apart for service in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. They were not allocated a specific portion of land like the other tribes because they were to serve as priests and attend to the religious duties of the nation. Instead, they were given cities to live in throughout the various territories of the other tribes. The Levites’ cities were to serve as centers for teaching, worship, and guidance for the people.

Cities for the Levites:In the verse, it is stated that the children of Joseph did not give any portion of land to the Levites, except cities to dwell in. These cities would provide a place for the Levites to reside and carry out their priestly duties. The cities were accompanied by suburbs (surrounding land) for their cattle and other possessions. This arrangement ensured that the Levites had places to live and support their livelihoods while they ministered to the people.

Symbolic and Practical Significance:This verse highlights the unique position of the Levites within the community of Israel. Their role was vital in maintaining the spiritual well-being of the people. By not receiving a direct portion of land, the Levites were not tied to a specific tribal territory, emphasizing their responsibility to serve all the tribes and unify the nation through their ministry. The provision of cities and land for their livelihoods ensured their sustenance, allowing them to focus on their sacred duties.

Lessons for Today:Joshua 14:4 reminds us of the importance of supporting those who are called to full-time ministry and leadership within the faith community. Just as the Levites were provided for by the other tribes, it is essential for believers today to ensure the needs of pastors, ministers, and those in spiritual leadership are met. This allows them to dedicate themselves fully to their service and teaching, benefitting the entire community.
