Joshua 15:31

Listen to this article

“And Ziklag, and Madmannah, and Sansannah,”

This verse is part of a larger passage in the Book of Joshua that describes the division of the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. The context is the distribution of territories to the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

In Joshua 15:31, three cities are mentioned: Ziklag, Madmannah, and Sansannah. These cities were assigned to the tribe of Judah as part of their inheritance. It’s worth noting that Ziklag was later given to the tribe of Simeon as well.

Ziklag:Ziklag was an important city in the Old Testament and played a significant role in the life of David before he became king. It was originally given to the tribe of Judah but later occupied by the Philistines. When David was fleeing from Saul, he sought refuge in Ziklag and received support from its king, Achish. From Ziklag, David launched his campaign against the Amalekites and recovered his people and possessions.

Madmannah:The city of Madmannah is mentioned only briefly in the Bible. Its exact location is uncertain, but it was likely within the territory of Judah. There is not much information available about Madmannah beyond its mention in Joshua 15:31.

Sansannah:Similar to Madmannah, Sansannah is not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible apart from this verse. Its precise location is unknown, but it was within the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah.

While these cities may seem less familiar compared to other well-known biblical locations, their mention in Joshua 15:31 provides important historical and geographical context regarding the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel.

Overall, Joshua 15:31 serves as a record of the distribution of territories to the tribe of Judah, reflecting the fulfilment of God’s promise to give the land of Canaan to the Israelites as their inheritance.
