Listen to this article

“And Zanoah, and Engannim, Tappuah, and Enam.”

Historical Context:Joshua 15 describes the allotment of land to the tribe of Judah after the conquest of Canaan. The chapter provides a detailed account of the cities and boundaries of the land given to the tribe. Verse 34 mentions several cities within the territory of Judah.

The Tribe of Judah:The tribe of Judah was one of the twelve tribes of Israel and held a prominent role in Israel’s history. Judah’s territory was located in the southern part of Canaan, and it became the leading tribe among the twelve. Joshua 15 records the cities and boundaries of the land inherited by the tribe of Judah.

Zanoah:Zanoah was one of the cities mentioned in Joshua 15:34. It was a city within the territory of Judah and is also mentioned in other parts of the Bible (Nehemiah 3:13). Zanoah was situated in the lowland of Judah and was likely a fortified city.

Engannim:Engannim was another city mentioned in Joshua 15:34. It is believed to be located in the region of the Shephelah, a hilly area between the coastal plain and the Judean hills. The exact location of Engannim is uncertain, but it was part of the territory given to the tribe of Judah.

Tappuah:Tappuah was a city mentioned in Joshua 15:34 as well. It was located in the hill country of Judah. Tappuah is also mentioned in other parts of the Bible (Joshua 12:17, Joshua 16:8). The city was allotted to the tribe of Judah and later became a Levitical city (Joshua 21:34).

Enam:Enam is the final city mentioned in Joshua 15:34. It is also known as Ain and is listed among the cities given to the tribe of Judah. The exact location of Enam is uncertain, but it was likely within the territory of Judah.

Overall, Joshua 15:34 provides a list of cities within the land given to the tribe of Judah. These cities played a significant role in the history and settlement of the Promised Land. The study of these cities helps us understand the fulfilment of God’s promise to the Israelites and the historical context of the book of Joshua.
