Joshua 15:46

Listen to this article

“And from Ekron even unto the sea, all that lay near Ashdod, with their villages:”

This verse is part of the description of the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah during the division of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel. The book of Joshua records the conquest and division of the land under the leadership of Joshua after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River.

In Joshua 15, the chapter provides an account of the boundaries and cities within the territory given to the tribe of Judah. It enumerates the cities and regions that were allotted to them as an inheritance. In verse 46, it specifically mentions the area extending from Ekron to the sea, encompassing the land near Ashdod and its surrounding villages.

Ekron and Ashdod were two prominent cities in the region of Philistia, which lay along the western coastal plain of ancient Canaan. These cities were inhabited by the Philistines, one of the neighbouring peoples the Israelites encountered during their conquest of the land. The verse indicates that the territory of Judah extended up to the borders of these cities.

This verse serves as a geographical reference, highlighting the extent of the land given to the tribe of Judah. It illustrates the fulfilment of God’s promise to the Israelites to possess and settle in the Promised Land. It also emphasises the meticulous and detailed division of the land among the various tribes.

By studying this verse in its broader context within the book of Joshua, readers gain insights into the historical and geographical aspects of the Israelites’ conquest of Canaan. Moreover, it highlights the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises to His people and the importance of unity and inheritance within the tribes of Israel.
