Joshua 15:56

Listen to this article

“Jezreel, and Jokdeam, and Zanoah,”

Context:The book of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after their conquest under Joshua’s leadership. Joshua 15 describes the inheritance of the tribe of Judah. Verse 56 lists three cities that were allotted to the tribe of Judah.

Jezreel:Jezreel was a city located in the territory of Judah. Its name means “God sows” or “God will sow.” Jezreel held strategic importance as it was situated on a hill overlooking the Jezreel Valley, a fertile area known for its agricultural productivity. This city is mentioned in other parts of the Bible, particularly in relation to the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the wickedness associated with the house of Ahab and Jezebel.

Jokdeam:Jokdeam was another city allotted to the tribe of Judah. Not much is known about this particular city, as it is not mentioned in other biblical passages. Its precise location is uncertain, but it was likely situated within the boundaries of Judah’s territory.

Zanoah:Zanoah was a town in the territory of Judah. Its name means “abundance” or “protection.” Zanoah is mentioned in other biblical accounts, including Nehemiah 3:13 and Nehemiah 11:30. It is noteworthy that in Nehemiah’s time, the people of Zanoah played an active role in the reconstruction of the walls of Jerusalem.

Spiritual lessons:While the specific mention of these cities may seem less significant in the grand narrative of the Bible, there are some spiritual lessons we can draw from this verse:

God’s faithfulness:Joshua 21:45 emphasises that God fulfilled every promise He made to Israel. The allotment of specific cities to each tribe shows God’s faithfulness in keeping His word. It reminds us of God’s reliability in fulfilling His promises to us as well.

Divine provision:The division of the Promised Land among the tribes illustrates God’s provision for His people. The inheritance of these cities demonstrates that God cares about the details of our lives and desires to bless us with good things.

Recognition of God’s sovereignty:As the Israelites received their allotted portions, they acknowledged God’s authority and sovereignty over their lives. Similarly, we should recognise God’s ownership and authority over our lives, submitting to His will and purposes.

Importance of community:The division of the land involved assigning specific territories to each tribe and city. This highlights the significance of community and the role of each city within the larger context of the tribe. It reminds us of the importance of unity and collaboration among believers in fulfilling God’s purposes.

Remember, although this verse may appear relatively simple, every part of Scripture is significant and can offer valuable insights for our spiritual growth and understanding.
