Joshua 17:12

Listen to this article

“Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.”

Context:The book of Joshua records the events following the death of Moses and the Israelites’ entry into the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. Joshua 17 describes the division of the land among the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim.

Inheritance of the Tribe of Manasseh:Joshua 17:1 states that the lot fell to the tribe of Manasseh, which was one of the tribes descended from Joseph. The tribe of Manasseh received its inheritance in the central part of the land, west of the Jordan River.

Failure to Drive Out the Canaanites:In Joshua 17:12, it is mentioned that the children of Manasseh were unable to drive out the inhabitants of certain cities. This failure resulted in the Canaanites dwelling in that land along with the Israelites.

Consequences of Incomplete Conquest:The inability of the children of Manasseh to fully drive out the Canaanites from their allotted territory was a failure to completely fulfill God’s command to possess the Promised Land and remove all the idolatrous nations. This compromise would later have negative spiritual and moral implications for Israel as the Canaanites’ influence could lead the Israelites astray from their devotion to God.

Lessons for Believers:

  • Faithfulness to God’s commands:The incomplete conquest of the land by the children of Manasseh serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying God’s instructions fully. Partial obedience can have long-lasting consequences and compromise the spiritual integrity of God’s people.
  • The danger of compromise:Allowing the Canaanites to dwell in their land exposed the Israelites to the influence of idolatrous practices and beliefs. Similarly, believers today need to be cautious about compromising with sinful influences that can hinder their spiritual growth and lead them away from God’s purposes.
  • Dependence on God’s strength:The failure of the children of Manasseh highlights the need for reliance on God’s strength and guidance. Instead of trusting in their own abilities, they should have sought the Lord’s help to completely drive out the Canaanites. Likewise, believers should rely on God’s power and wisdom to overcome challenges and temptations in their lives.

Overall, Joshua 17:12 reminds us of the importance of wholehearted obedience to God’s commands and the potential consequences of compromise. It encourages us to rely on God’s strength and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
