“And Avim, and Parah, and Ophrah,”
Context: Joshua 18 records the division of the Promised Land among the remaining seven tribes of Israel. After the initial conquest of Jericho and Ai, the land was yet to be fully possessed, and Joshua was instructed to divide it among the remaining tribes.
Identification of places:
- Avim: Avim was a town located in the territory of Benjamin. It is mentioned only here in the Bible, and its precise location is uncertain.
- Parah: Parah is also mentioned only in this verse, and its exact location is unknown.
- Ophrah: Ophrah was a town in the territory of Benjamin, identified as the birthplace of Gideon (Judges 6:11). It is different from the Ophrah mentioned in the territory of Manasseh (Joshua 17:2).
The division of the land: Joshua 18 outlines the process of dividing the land among the remaining tribes. The tribe of Benjamin received its inheritance through casting lots (Joshua 18:10), and this verse lists some of the towns within Benjamin’s territory.
God’s faithfulness: The division of the land among the tribes of Israel was a fulfillment of God’s promise to give them the Promised Land (Genesis 12:7; Joshua 1:6-9). As the Israelites conquered various territories, they were witnessing the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His covenant.
Lessons for us:
- Trust in God’s promises: Just as the Israelites trusted in God’s promise to give them the land, we can trust in God’s promises for our lives. He is faithful to fulfill His Word.
- Obedience and action: The Israelites had to take action and possess the land. Similarly, we should be obedient to God’s leading and actively pursue His purposes for our lives.
- Contentment with our inheritance: Each tribe received a specific portion of the land. Likewise, God has given each of us unique gifts, talents, and opportunities. We should be content with what He has entrusted to us and use it for His glory.
