Joshua 18:5

Listen to this article

“And they shall divide it into seven parts: Judah shall abide in their coast on the south, and the house of Joseph shall abide in their coasts on the north.”

Historical Context: The book of Joshua records the events following the death of Moses, as Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land. At this point, the land had been partially conquered, but there were still seven tribes of Israel who had not received their allotted inheritance.

Land Distribution: In this verse, Joshua addresses the remaining tribes and instructs them to divide the remaining unconquered land into seven parts. The tribe of Judah was assigned to the southern region, while the house of Joseph (comprised of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh) was to settle in the northern region. This was part of God’s plan to allocate the land of Canaan to each of the tribes of Israel.

Unity and Cooperation: The division of the land among the tribes required cooperation and unity among the Israelites. Each tribe had a responsibility to establish their portion of the land, ensuring that all the tribes could settle in their respective territories. This distribution was not only a practical arrangement but also a way to maintain unity and solidarity among the people of Israel.

God’s Faithfulness: The fulfilment of the promise of the land of Canaan to the Israelites demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The division of the land was a tangible manifestation of God’s provision and His commitment to His chosen people. It was a reminder to the Israelites that God was with them, leading and guiding them in the fulfilment of His promises.
