Joshua 18:9

Posted on 18 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at Shiloh.”

Historical Context:Joshua 18:9 takes place during the time when the Israelites had entered the Promised Land after the death of Moses. Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites, was tasked with dividing the land among the twelve tribes of Israel. At this point, several tribes were yet to receive their allotted inheritance.

The Division of the Land:In this verse, we see that the men were sent out to survey and describe the land. They divided it into seven parts, likely representing the remaining seven tribes that had not yet received their inheritance. This survey was conducted to determine the allocation of land for each tribe.

Diligence and Obedience:The men mentioned in the verse exemplify diligence and obedience. They carried out their task meticulously by going through the entire land, documenting its cities, and dividing it into portions. This act demonstrates their commitment to fulfilling the instructions given by Joshua and ultimately, by God.

Shiloh:The verse states that the men returned to Joshua at Shiloh. Shiloh was an important location in Israel at that time. It was the place where the tabernacle, the central place of worship, had been set up. Joshua had established his base at Shiloh, and it served as the central point for the distribution of land and for seeking guidance from God.

Lessons for us:

  • Diligence in our tasks:We can learn from the men who surveyed the land. They were diligent in carrying out their responsibilities. As Christians, we are called to work diligently in whatever tasks or assignments we are given, whether in our jobs, studies, or serving God and others.
  • Obedience to God’s instructions:The men in Joshua 18:9 followed the instructions given to them by Joshua, who was God’s appointed leader. Likewise, we should seek to be obedient to God’s Word and follow His guidance in our lives. Obedience to God brings blessings and aligns us with His will.
  • Seeking guidance in worship:Shiloh was the place where the tabernacle was located, representing the presence of God among His people. In our lives, we should prioritise seeking God’s guidance and spending time in worship and prayer. It is in His presence that we can receive clarity, direction, and peace.

Overall, Joshua 18:9 reminds us of the importance of diligence, obedience, and seeking God’s guidance in our lives. By emulating these qualities, we can walk in alignment with God’s will and experience His blessings.
