Joshua 19:11

Listen to this article

“And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam.”

This verse is a part of the description of the territory allotted to the tribe of Zebulun in the Promised Land. In the book of Joshua, the land was divided among the twelve tribes of Israel after they crossed the Jordan River and entered Canaan.

In this particular verse, we see the geographical boundaries of the inheritance for the tribe of Zebulun being described. Let’s break it down further:

“And their border went up toward the sea”: The border of Zebulun extended towards the Mediterranean Sea. Zebulun’s territory was located in the northern part of the land of Canaan, with its western border reaching the coastline.

“Maralah”: Maralah is mentioned as a landmark in Zebulun’s boundary. However, the exact location of Maralah is uncertain, as there is limited information about it in the biblical text and historical records. Its significance lies primarily in identifying the extent of Zebulun’s land.

“Dabbasheth”: Dabbasheth is another landmark mentioned in Zebulun’s boundary. Similar to Maralah, its specific location is not known with certainty. It served as a reference point to determine the territory assigned to the tribe.

“The river that is before Jokneam”: This refers to a river that marked the eastern border of Zebulun’s territory. Jokneam was a city located in the land of Zebulun. The river mentioned here likely flowed near Jokneam, indicating the extent of Zebulun’s land towards the east.

Overall, Joshua 19:11 provides geographical details regarding the borders and landmarks of the territory given to the tribe of Zebulun. While the specific locations mentioned might not be known today, the passage emphasizes the precision and meticulousness with which the land was distributed among the Israelite tribes, fulfilling God’s promise to each tribe as they settled in the Promised Land.
