Listen to this article

“And Remeth, and Engannim, and Enhaddah, and Bethpazzez;”

Context and Background:The book of Joshua is part of the historical books in the Old Testament of the Bible. It documents the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua after the death of Moses. Joshua 19 describes the division of the land among the tribes of Israel. The verse in question, Joshua 19:21, is part of a list of towns and cities allotted to the tribe of Zebulun.

The Tribe of Zebulun:Zebulun was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and their territory was located in the northern part of the land of Canaan. Zebulun’s territory was situated between the Sea of Galilee to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.

The verse mentions several cities that were part of Zebulun’s inheritance.

Remeth:Remeth was one of the cities given to the tribe of Zebulun. Its exact location is not known with certainty, but it was likely situated in the territory assigned to Zebulun.

Engannim:Engannim was another city allotted to the tribe of Zebulun. Its name means fountain of gardens or spring of gardens. Engannim was located near the border of Zebulun and Issachar, and it is believed to be modern-day Jenin in the West Bank.

Enhaddah:Enhaddah is mentioned as a city given to the tribe of Zebulun. The exact location of Enhaddah is not known.

Bethpazzez:Bethpazzez is the last city mentioned in Joshua 19:21. Its location is uncertain, as it is not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible.

Significance:This verse serves to document the distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel, fulfilling God’s promise to give the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham. It also demonstrates the meticulous recording of the specific cities and towns that were assigned to each tribe, ensuring that each tribe received its inheritance. Overall, Joshua 19:21 provides historical details about the distribution of land and cities to the tribe of Zebulun, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
