Joshua 19:29

Posted on 21 October 2024
Listen to this article

"And then the coast turneth to Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib."

Joshua 19:29 is part of a larger passage describing the allotment of land to the tribe of Asher. In the preceding verses, the borders of Asher’s territory are outlined, and in this particular verse, the focus is on the coastal region of their inheritance.

The verse begins by stating that the coast turns to Ramah. Ramah was likely a location on the boundary of Asher’s territory, though its exact location is uncertain. Following that, the verse mentions the strong city Tyre. Tyre was a significant Phoenician city known for its maritime trade and was located on the Mediterranean coast. This reference indicates that the border of Asher extended to Tyre, and it likely served as a prominent landmark or boundary point.

The verse then mentions Hosah, which was another location on the border of Asher’s territory. Its precise location is unknown. Finally, the verse states that the outgoings of Hosah are at the sea, indicating that Asher’s territory extended from the coast to the town of Achzib.

Achzib, also known as Ecdippa, was a coastal town situated between Tyre and Acco (modern-day Acre) in present-day Israel. It was located on the Mediterranean Sea and is mentioned in other parts of the Bible, including the book of Micah (Micah 1:14).

Overall, Joshua 19:29:provides details about the coastal boundaries of the land allotted to the tribe of Asher during the distribution of the Promised Land among the twelve tribes of Israel.
