“And the fenced cities are Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth.”

Context and Background: Joshua 19 is part of the narrative describing the division of the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel. In this chapter, the inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali is detailed, listing the cities and borders allotted to them.

The Tribe of Naphtali: The tribe of Naphtali was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The inheritance of Naphtali was situated in the northern region of Canaan, bordering the territories of Asher and Zebulun. Naphtali received a portion of land that included several cities, one of which is mentioned in Joshua 19:35.

Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath: These cities, Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, were among the fortified cities within the territory given to the tribe of Naphtali. The mention of “fenced cities” highlights their fortified nature, indicating their defensive structures and walls for protection against potential threats.

Rakkath and Chinnereth: In addition to Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, the cities of Rakkath and Chinnereth are also mentioned. Rakkath, also known as Tiberias, became an important city during later periods, named after the nearby Sea of Galilee (also known as the Sea of Chinnereth). Chinnereth refers to the region around the Sea of Galilee itself.
