Joshua 2:15

Listen to this article

“Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.”

Context:The book of Joshua is the sixth book of the Old Testament and provides an account of the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua. In this particular verse, Joshua sends two spies to Jericho to gather intelligence before the Israelites’ attack on the city.

Rahab’s role:Rahab, a prostitute, played a crucial role in this story. She hid the spies on her roof and helped them escape from the city authorities. In verse 15, Rahab lowers the spies down through a window using a cord since her house was located upon the town wall.

Rahab’s faith and courage:Rahab’s actions demonstrate her faith in the God of Israel and her courage to protect the spies. By hiding the Israelite spies, she put her life at risk, as helping the enemy of the city could have severe consequences. Her actions show that she believed in the power and victory of the Israelite God.

God’s providence and guidance:The fact that Rahab’s house was on the town wall and she dwelt upon it suggests God’s providential guidance. God orchestrated events in such a way that the spies found refuge in Rahab’s home, a strategic location for their mission. This emphasizes God’s involvement in the smallest details and His ability to use unexpected individuals to fulfill His purposes.

Symbolism:The cord used to lower the spies down from the window can be seen as a symbol of salvation and deliverance. Just as Rahab lowered the spies to safety through the cord, so too does God provide a means of escape and deliverance for those who trust in Him.

Rahab’s significance in biblical history:Rahab’s story extends beyond Joshua 2:15. She not only protected the spies but also made a covenant with them, asking for the protection of her family when the Israelites attacked Jericho (Joshua 2:12-14). Rahab’s faith and actions earned her a place in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5), highlighting God’s grace and redemption.

In conclusion, Joshua 2:15 showcases Rahab’s faith, courage, and the divine providence guiding the events. It teaches us about God’s ability to use ordinary people in extraordinary ways and emphasizes the importance of trust and faith in Him.
