Joshua 2:2

Posted on 8 September 2024
Listen to this article

“And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the country.”

Historical Context:Joshua 2:2 takes place during the time when the Israelites, led by Joshua, were preparing to conquer the Promised Land. After the death of Moses, Joshua became the new leader of the Israelites, and they were about to cross the Jordan River to take possession of the land God had promised to give them.

The Setting:The Israelites had reached the city of Jericho, which was the first major obstacle they had to overcome in their conquest of the land. Jericho was a fortified city with high walls, making it a formidable stronghold.

The Spies:In this verse, it is mentioned that two men from the children of Israel came to Jericho as spies to search out the land. These men were sent by Joshua to gather intelligence about the city, its defences, and the strength of its inhabitants. Sending spies was a common practice in ancient warfare to gather information before engaging in battle.

Rahab, the Harlot:The subsequent verses reveal that these spies entered the house of a woman named Rahab, who was a harlot or a prostitute. Rahab was a Canaanite, an inhabitant of Jericho. She hid the spies on her rooftop and protected them from the authorities who were searching for them. Rahab’s actions showed courage and faith in the God of Israel.

God’s Providence:The fact that the spies were able to enter Jericho undetected and find refuge in Rahab’s house was not a coincidence. It was part of God’s providential plan to ensure the success of the Israelites in conquering the land. God was working behind the scenes, orchestrating events and using unlikely individuals like Rahab to fulfill His purposes.

Rahab’s Faith:Rahab’s actions in protecting the spies were motivated by her faith in the God of Israel. She expressed her belief in the Lord’s power and acknowledged that He had given the land to the Israelites. Rahab’s faith was rewarded as she and her family were spared when the Israelites eventually conquered Jericho.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God can use unexpected people to accomplish His purposes. Rahab, a Canaanite harlot, became an instrument in God’s plan.
  • Faith in God can lead to courageous actions. Rahab’s faith moved her to risk her life to protect the spies.
  • God’s providence is at work even in difficult situations. The spies’ arrival at Rahab’s house and her protection of them were part of God’s plan for the conquest of Jericho.
  • God’s promises are sure. Rahab acknowledged that the God of Israel had given the land to the Israelites, demonstrating her trust in God’s faithfulness.

Joshua 2:2 sets the stage for the remarkable story of Rahab’s faith and the eventual conquest of Jericho by the Israelites. It highlights God’s sovereignty, the faithfulness of His people, and His ability to work through unexpected circumstances for His glory.
