Listen to this article

“The Lord also spake unto Joshua, saying,”

Context:The book of Joshua recounts the story of the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. In Joshua 20, we find instructions regarding the cities of refuge, which were designated as places of safety for individuals who unintentionally caused the death of another person.

God’s Command:The verse begins with the statement that the Lord spoke to Joshua. This indicates that Joshua received a direct communication from God. Throughout the book of Joshua, we see the importance of Joshua seeking and obeying the instructions of the Lord.

God’s Concern for Justice and Mercy:The commandment that follows in Joshua 20 pertains to the establishment of cities of refuge. These cities were meant to provide refuge and protection for someone who had accidentally caused the death of another person. They were a means of ensuring that justice was served with mercy.

God’s Provision for the Accused:The establishment of cities of refuge highlights God’s concern for justice and fairness. Accidental or unintentional acts that resulted in someone’s death could lead to retaliation from the victim’s family or community. By setting up designated cities of refuge, God provided a way for the accused to find safety and receive a fair trial.

The Role of Joshua:As the leader of Israel, Joshua was responsible for implementing God’s instructions. He was to ensure that the cities of refuge were established as safe havens for those who needed protection. Joshua’s obedience to God’s commands was crucial in upholding justice and promoting a culture of mercy among the Israelites.

Application to Our Lives:While the specific circumstances of cities of refuge may not apply to us today, we can learn important principles from this passage. It reminds us of God’s concern for justice and mercy, and the importance of providing protection and fairness to those in need. It also emphasizes the significance of seeking God’s guidance and obeying His commands, just as Joshua did.

In summary, Joshua 20:1 reveals that God spoke to Joshua, commanding him to establish cities of refuge. This passage highlights God’s concern for justice and mercy, as well as the importance of Joshua’s role in implementing God’s instructions.
