Joshua 21:32

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

"Out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Hammoth-dor with her suburbs, and Kartan with her suburbs; three cities."

Context:Joshua 21 recounts the allocation of the Levitical cities among the tribes of Israel. The Levites were chosen by God to be a priestly tribe and were not given a specific territory like the other tribes. Instead, they were allotted cities from the territories of the other tribes for their dwelling.

Tribe of Naphtali:The tribe of Naphtali was one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Its allotment was located in the northern part of Canaan. The cities mentioned in Joshua 21:32 were part of the inheritance given to the tribe of Naphtali.

Kedesh in Galilee:Kedesh in Galilee was designated as a city of refuge, a place where someone who unintentionally caused the death of another person could seek asylum. These cities provided protection from avengers of blood until a fair trial could be conducted.

Hammothdor and Kartan:Hammothdor and Kartan are mentioned as the additional cities along with Kedesh in Galilee. While the Bible does not provide much information about these specific cities, it is understood that they were given to the Levites for their dwelling.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:

  • City of Refuge:The concept of cities of refuge points to God’s mercy and justice. They provide a place of safety for those who have unintentionally caused harm, illustrating God’s desire for fairness and the opportunity for repentance.
  • Protection and Salvation:In a broader sense, the cities of refuge serve as a foreshadowing of our need for a spiritual refuge. In Christ, we find refuge from the consequences of sin and the judgment it brings. He offers salvation and protection to all who seek Him.
  • God’s Provision:The allocation of cities to the Levites demonstrates God’s faithfulness in providing for the needs of His chosen people. Just as the Levites were given cities from the territories of the other tribes, God is our ultimate Provider who meets our needs according to His wisdom and grace.
  • The Role of the Levites:The Levites, as priests, were entrusted with the responsibility of teaching God’s law and leading the people in worship. Their presence among the tribes reminded Israel of their covenant with God and the importance of following His commands.

Practical Application:

  • Seeking God’s Refuge:Just as the cities of refuge provided physical protection, we should seek refuge in God when we face challenges, trials, or when we have made mistakes. He is our source of strength, comfort, and forgiveness.
  • God’s Justice and Mercy:The concept of cities of refuge reminds us of the balance between God’s justice and mercy. While God is just and sin has consequences, He is also merciful, offering us forgiveness and redemption through Jesus Christ.
  • Gratitude for God’s Provision:Reflect on the ways in which God has provided for your needs throughout your life. Remember His faithfulness and provision, and express gratitude for His blessings.
  • Teaching and Worship:Like the Levites, believers today are called to teach God’s Word and worship Him faithfully. Consider how you can fulfil this calling by sharing your faith, studying the Bible, and participating in a community of believers.
