Joshua 21:5

Posted on 21 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.”

Historical Context:Joshua 21 describes the allocation of the Levitical cities among the various tribes of Israel. The Levites were appointed by God to serve Him and the people in matters of worship and instruction. They were not given a specific territory as their inheritance, but rather received cities scattered throughout the land of Israel from the other tribes.

The Kohathites:The verse specifically mentions the children of Kohath, who were one of the three main divisions of the Levites. The Kohathites were responsible for the transportation and care of the holy furnishings of the tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant. They were assigned cities from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

Allocation by Lot:The allocation of the cities to the Levites was determined by casting lots. This method ensured that the distribution was fair and impartial, as it relied on God’s guidance. The Kohathites received ten cities in total, which were distributed among the tribes mentioned.

God’s Provision:This verse highlights God’s provision for the Levites, ensuring that they were provided with cities to dwell in throughout the land. This allocation enabled the Levites to fulfill their duties as priests and worship leaders among the people of Israel. God cared for their needs and made provisions for them to carry out their responsibilities.

Symbolism and Spiritual Application:The allocation of cities to the Levites serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in providing for His chosen people. It also emphasizes the importance of the Levites’ role in facilitating worship and teaching the Law of God. In a broader sense, it illustrates God’s provision for His people and how He equips and places individuals in specific roles for the benefit of the community.

Lesson of Stewardship:The Levites’ allocation of cities can teach us about stewardship. As believers, we are called to be good stewards of the resources God has given us, whether they are material possessions, talents, or time. We should use what God has entrusted to us wisely and for His glory, just as the Levites used their assigned cities to serve the people of Israel and honor God.

In summary, Joshua 21:5 highlights the allocation of cities to the children of Kohath, one of the Levitical divisions. Through casting lots, they received ten cities from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and half the tribe of Manasseh. This verse reminds us of God’s provision for His people and teaches us about stewardship and fulfilling our roles in service to God and others.
