Joshua 22:1

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

“Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,”

Context:The book of Joshua describes the events that occurred after the Israelites crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land. The verse in question takes place after the conquest of the land and the division of the land among the twelve tribes of Israel.

The Promised Land:The Reubenites, Gadites, and half tribe of Manasseh were allotted their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan River. This was the region known as Gilead, which was conquered from the Amorites (Numbers 32:33-42, Deuteronomy 3:12-17). These tribes requested permission from Moses to settle in this land, as it was suitable for their livestock (Numbers 32:1-5). Moses agreed on the condition that they first assist their fellow Israelites in conquering the Promised Land west of the Jordan (Numbers 32:20-32).

Unity of the Tribes:Joshua’s call to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh is significant because it shows the unity of the twelve tribes of Israel. Though these tribes received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan, they were still committed to the common cause of possessing the land of Canaan as a whole. They demonstrated their commitment by helping the other tribes in the conquest of the land before settling in their own territories.

Faithfulness to God:The unity and cooperation displayed by the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh also indicate their faithfulness to God’s commands. They fulfilled their promise to Moses and remained committed to the overall mission of conquering and possessing the Promised Land. Their obedience to God’s instructions exemplifies the importance of honoring commitments and fulfilling obligations.

Application:Joshua 22:1 reminds us of the value of unity and cooperation within the community of believers. Just as the tribes of Israel worked together to accomplish a common goal, Christians are called to live in harmony and support one another (Romans 12:16, Ephesians 4:3). This verse also encourages us to remain faithful to God’s commands, even when circumstances or personal interests might tempt us to deviate from our commitments.

In conclusion, Joshua 22:1 highlights the unity, cooperation, and faithfulness of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh as they fulfilled their commitment to help conquer the Promised Land before settling in their own territories. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to prioritise unity, cooperation, and faithfulness in our relationships with one another and in our commitment to following God’s commands.
