Joshua 23:4

Listen to this article

“Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.”

This verse is a part of Joshua’s farewell address to the Israelites. Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites, is nearing the end of his life and is addressing the people before his departure. In this verse, Joshua highlights the fulfilment of God’s promise to give the land of Canaan as an inheritance to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Inheritance and Division of the Land:The verse begins with Joshua proclaiming that God has divided the remaining nations by lot among the tribes of Israel. The land of Canaan was the long‑awaited inheritance promised to the descendants of Abraham (Genesis 12:7). This division ensured that each tribe would have its portion of the land. The process of dividing the land was conducted using lots, a method believed to involve divine guidance.

From Jordan to the Great Sea:Joshua mentions that the inheritance spans from the Jordan River to the great sea westward. This describes the territory that includes the Promised Land, stretching from the Jordan River on the east to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. The entire region was designated for the Israelites.

Nations Cut Off:Joshua also acknowledges that the nations occupying the land had been conquered and cut off by the Israelites. Throughout the book of Joshua, we see how God had enabled the Israelites to defeat various nations and establish their presence in Canaan. It underscores the fulfilment of God’s promise to give the land to His chosen people.

Joshua 23:4 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and the completion of the conquest of Canaan. It reinforces the idea that the Israelites are about to inherit the land promised to them by God and that it is a testament to God’s provision, guidance, and strength throughout their journey.
