Joshua 23:7

Posted on 5 November 2024
Listen to this article

“That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them”

Context:The book of Joshua records the events following the death of Moses as the Israelites, led by Joshua, entered the Promised Land to possess it. Joshua 23 is part of Joshua’s farewell address to the people of Israel, where he encourages them to remain faithful to God and warns against idolatry.

Separation from the nations:In Joshua 23:7, Joshua reminds the Israelites of the importance of separating themselves from the nations that remained in the land. God had commanded the Israelites to drive out the inhabitants of Canaan due to their idolatry and wickedness. However, some nations were not fully conquered, and Joshua warns the Israelites not to associate with them.

Avoiding idolatry:The verse emphasises that the Israelites should not make mention of the names of the gods of these nations. This means they were not to acknowledge or invoke the false gods worshipped by the surrounding nations. The Israelites were to maintain their exclusive devotion to the one true God, Yahweh.

Prohibition against serving and bowing down to idols:Joshua further cautions the Israelites against serving and bowing down to these gods. Idol worship involved not only acknowledging false gods but also engaging in rituals and practices associated with them. The Israelites were to refrain from participating in any form of idolatry or pagan worship.

Application for believers today:Although Joshua 23:7 specifically addresses the Israelites in their historical context, there are principles that can be applied to believers today:

  • Faithful commitment to God:Like the Israelites, believers are called to be committed to God alone. We are to worship Him, serve Him, and acknowledge Him as the only true God. We should not compromise our faith by engaging in idolatry or embracing false religious practices.
  • Separation from worldly influences:We are also called to separate ourselves from the ungodly influences of the world. While we interact with people from different backgrounds, it is important to guard our hearts and minds against the values and practices contrary to God’s Word. We should not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2).
  • Avoidance of idolatry:While we may not encounter literal idols today, idolatry can manifest in various forms, such as the love of money, fame, material possessions, or even excessive focus on relationships or personal desires. We should guard against placing anything above our love and devotion to God.
  • Watchful speech:In mentioning not to make mention of the names of false gods, the verse highlights the importance of being careful with our words. As believers, we should not engage in blasphemy or speak lightly of sacred matters. Our speech should reflect reverence for God and be used to uplift and encourage others.

In summary, Joshua 23:7 serves as a reminder to the Israelites and believers today to remain faithful to God, avoid idolatry, separate themselves from ungodly influences, and guard their speech. It calls for a wholehearted commitment to the worship and service of the one true God.
