“So the ark of the Lord compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.”
Joshua 6:11 is a verse from the Book of Joshua:which recounts the conquest of Jericho by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua, after the death of Moses. In this chapter, the city of Jericho stood as an obstacle in the path of the Israelites as they entered the Promised Land.
This particular verse describes the movement of the Ark of the Covenant:around the city of Jericho. The Ark of the Lord, which symbolized God’s presence among the Israelites, was carried by priests who encircled the city once. This action had significant symbolic and spiritual implications.
Obedience to God’s instructions:Prior to this event, God had given specific instructions to Joshua on how to conquer Jericho. God commanded the Israelites to march around the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, to march around the city seven times, blowing trumpets and shouting, after which the walls of Jericho would fall down (Joshua 6:2-5). The Israelites faithfully followed these instructions, demonstrating their trust and obedience to God.
The presence of God among His people:The Ark of the Lord, which contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments and represented God’s presence, was at the center of the Israelite camp. As the Ark was carried around the city, it signified that God was leading and fighting on behalf of His people. The Israelites’ victory depended on their reliance on God’s power rather than their own strength.
The significance of lodging in the camp:After the completion of the first march around the city, the Ark of the Lord was brought back to the Israelite camp, and the people lodged there. This action indicated that the Israelites were dwelling in the presence of God, seeking His guidance and protection throughout the entire conquest.
Overall, Joshua 6:11 emphasizes the obedience, faith, and trust of the Israelites in following God’s instructions and recognizing His presence among them. It highlights the importance of relying on God’s power and seeking His guidance in order to achieve victory over obstacles and challenges.
