Joshua 7:22

Posted on 29 September 2024
Listen to this article

“So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.”

Context:The verse is part of the account of the Israelites’ conquest of Jericho under the leadership of Joshua. After the miraculous fall of Jericho’s walls, God commanded that the city and everything in it should be devoted to destruction, with the exception of the silver, gold, and vessels of bronze and iron, which were to be brought into the treasury of the Lord (Joshua 6:17-19).

The Sin of Achan:However, in Joshua 7, we learn that a man named Achan had violated this command by taking some of the devoted things for himself. Achan had seen among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, 200 shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing 50 shekels. He took them and hid them in his tent (Joshua 7:21).

Joshua’s Investigation:When the Israelites faced defeat in their subsequent battle against the city of Ai, Joshua sought God’s guidance and was told that there was sin in the camp. Consequently, Joshua conducted a thorough investigation to identify the transgressor. The messengers he sent discovered the hidden treasures in Achan’s tent (Joshua 7:22-23).

Lessons from Joshua 7:22:

  • The seriousness of sin:Achan’s actions reveal the gravity of sin. His disobedience not only affected him personally but also brought defeat and loss to the entire Israelite camp. This teaches us the importance of obedience to God’s commands and the consequences that can follow disobedience.
  • The deceitfulness of sin:Achan tried to conceal his sin by hiding the stolen items in his tent. This reminds us that sin often operates in secrecy and can lead to further sin and destructive consequences. It is important for us to be vigilant and honest in dealing with our own sins.
  • The necessity of confession:Achan’s sin remained hidden until it was exposed by Joshua’s investigation. Confession and repentance are necessary for dealing with sin in our lives. Achan eventually confessed his sin and faced the consequences (Joshua 7:19-21). Likewise, when we sin, it is essential to confess it before God, seek forgiveness, and turn away from it.
  • The communal nature of sin:Achan’s sin affected the entire community of Israel. Similarly, our actions can impact others, whether positively or negatively. We should strive to live in a way that promotes righteousness and encourages others to do the same.
  • God’s faithfulness and justice:While Achan’s sin had serious consequences, it is crucial to note that God’s justice and faithfulness were demonstrated in this account. His instructions were clear, and He revealed the sin to Joshua, allowing it to be dealt with. It is a reminder that God is just and will hold us accountable for our actions.
