Joshua 9:14

Listen to this article

“And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord.”

Context: The book of Joshua records the conquest of the Promised Land by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. In this particular verse, Joshua and the Israelites encounter the Gibeonites, who use deception to make a treaty with Israel.

Importance of Seeking God’s Counsel: The verse highlights a critical mistake made by Joshua and the Israelites. They took provisions from the Gibeonites without seeking the counsel of the Lord. This lack of seeking divine guidance had consequences, as we will see in the following verses. It serves as a reminder for believers to always seek God’s counsel in every decision they make.

Trusting in Appearances: The Israelites were deceived by the Gibeonites because they relied solely on what they saw and heard. They did not consult God or seek His wisdom in discerning the truth. This incident teaches us the importance of discernment and not being swayed by appearances alone. We should always seek God’s guidance to discern the truth in any situation.

The Danger of Self-Reliance: The Israelites’ failure to consult the Lord before making a decision shows the danger of self-reliance. Joshua and the leaders made a judgment based on their own reasoning without considering God’s perspective. It is a reminder that we should never rely solely on our own understanding but rather acknowledge God in all our ways (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Consequences of Not Seeking God’s Counsel: The consequences of the Israelites’ failure to seek God’s counsel become evident in the subsequent verses. They made a treaty with the Gibeonites, unaware that they were a nearby Canaanite nation that God had commanded them to destroy. This decision led to complications and challenges for Israel in the future. It serves as a reminder that neglecting to seek God’s counsel can lead to unfavorable outcomes in our lives.

Application: Joshua 9:14 serves as a reminder to believers today to seek God’s counsel in all aspects of life. It teaches us the importance of discernment, not relying on appearances alone, and acknowledging God’s wisdom above our own understanding. Through prayer, seeking guidance from Scripture, and consulting mature believers, we can make more informed decisions and align ourselves with God’s will. Remember that the Bible contains numerous valuable lessons and teachings, so further exploration of the surrounding verses and studying the book of Joshua as a whole will provide a deeper understanding of the context and significance of Joshua 9:14.
