Joshua 9:3

Posted on 1 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,”

Context:The book of Joshua describes the conquest of the land of Canaan by the Israelites under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. Joshua 9:3 is part of the narrative after the miraculous fall of the city of Jericho and the subsequent defeat of the city of Ai.

Key Points:

  • Deception of the Gibeonites:The verse mentions the inhabitants of Gibeon, a nearby city, who became aware of the Israelites’ victories in Jericho and Ai. Fearing for their safety, the Gibeonites resorted to deception in order to protect themselves.
  • Fear and Strategy:The people of Gibeon recognised the military might of the Israelites and their God-given success in battle. They believed they would not be able to withstand the Israelite forces, so they devised a plan to save themselves.
  • Covenant with the Gibeonites:In the subsequent verses, it is revealed that the Gibeonites sent ambassadors who pretended to be from a distant land. They approached Joshua and the leaders of Israel, claiming to have heard of the victories and desiring to make a treaty with the Israelites. Joshua and the leaders, unaware of the deception, made a covenant with the Gibeonites, promising not to harm them.

Lessons and Applications:

  • The Importance of Seeking God’s Guidance:This passage highlights the consequence of Joshua and the leaders of Israel not consulting the Lord before making a covenant. They made an agreement based on their own judgement, without seeking God’s guidance. As believers, we should learn from this and always seek God’s wisdom and direction in our decision-making.
  • The Danger of Deception:The Gibeonites’ deception teaches us the danger of being deceived by others. It reminds us to be discerning, to seek truth, and not to hastily trust appearances or make decisions solely based on human understanding. We are called to be wise and discerning in our dealings with others.
  • God’s Sovereignty and Faithfulness:Despite the Israelites’ mistake, God ultimately used the situation for His purposes. In the chapters that follow, we see how God’s sovereignty and faithfulness unfold, as He continues to guide and work through Joshua and the Israelites to fulfill His plans for the conquest of the land.
  • Honouring Commitments:Although the covenant with the Gibeonites was made under false pretences, Joshua and the leaders of Israel honoured their commitment. This shows the importance of integrity and honouring our commitments, even in challenging or unexpected situations.

In summary, Joshua 9:3 captures a significant event in the book of Joshua, where the inhabitants of Gibeon resorted to deception to protect themselves from the advancing Israelite forces. This passage teaches us important lessons about seeking God’s guidance, the danger of deception, God’s sovereignty and faithfulness, and the importance of integrity in honouring commitments.
