Joshua 1 begins with the Lord speaking to Joshua, Moses’ successor, encouraging him to be strong and courageous as he leads the Israelites into the Promised Land. God promised to give them the land that He had sworn to their ancestors. Joshua is instructed to meditate on the Law of Moses day and night, obeying it faithfully, so that he may prosper and succeed in all his endeavours.
God assures Joshua that He will be with him wherever he goes and no one will be able to stand against him. Joshua then addresses the officers of Israel, urging them to prepare the people to cross the Jordan River and possess the land. He instructs them to follow the commands of Moses and reminds them of God’s promise to be with them.
The people respond to Joshua’s leadership by promising to obey him as they had obeyed Moses. They express their loyalty and support, encouraging Joshua to be strong and courageous. Joshua sends two spies to Jericho, who are hidden and protected by Rahab, a prostitute. They report back to Joshua, affirming that the people of the land are fearful of the Israelites because of God’s presence among them.
