In Joshua 2, Joshua sends two spies secretly into the city of Jericho to gather information before the Israelites’ invasion. They arrive at the house of Rahab, a prostitute, and seek refuge there. The king of Jericho learns about the spies and sends soldiers to capture them. However, Rahab hides the men on her roof and deceives the soldiers, stating that the spies have already left the city. She explains that she believes in the power of the Israelite God and asks for protection for herself and her family when the Israelites conquer Jericho.
The spies agree to Rahab’s request, and she lowers them down the city wall using a scarlet rope, instructing them to hide in the mountains for three days to avoid capture. The spies promise Rahab that if she ties the scarlet rope in her window as a sign, her family will be spared. They make a covenant, and the spies return to Joshua, reporting their successful mission and Rahab’s plea for protection.
This chapter showcases the courage and faith of Rahab, an unexpected ally, and reveals God’s provision for those who trust in Him. To delve deeper into the context and significance of each verse in Joshua 2, click on the following links:
