Listen to this article

“And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.”

This verse is part of the account of Jephthah, one of the judges who governed Israel during a time of conflict and oppression. Jephthah was a valiant warrior, chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Ammonites.

In this particular verse, the elders of the region of Gilead approach Jephthah to seek his assistance in the impending battle against the Ammonites. They acknowledge the significance of their request by invoking the name of the Lord as a witness to their agreement with Jephthah’s words.

This verse highlights a few key points:

  • Recognition of God’s presence:The elders acknowledge the Lord’s presence and divine authority in their discussion. By invoking the Lord as a witness, they show reverence for God and His involvement in their decision-making process. It emphasises the importance of seeking God’s guidance and involving Him in their deliberations.
  • Commitment to honouring their word:The elders express their commitment to fulfilling the agreement made with Jephthah. By saying, “if we do not so according to thy words,” they indicate their intention to honour their part of the agreement. This commitment underscores the significance of integrity and fulfilling promises, reflecting the importance of faithfulness in interpersonal relationships.
  • Accountability:The elders invoke the Lord as a witness to hold them accountable for their words and actions. They recognise that their agreement with Jephthah is not just a matter between individuals but involves God as a witness. This acknowledgement reflects a sense of responsibility and a desire to act according to God’s will and uphold the principles of justice and righteousness.

Overall, Judges 11:10 portrays a solemn moment where the elders of Gilead seek Jephthah’s assistance and affirm their commitment to honouring their agreement. It underscores the importance of recognising God’s presence, fulfilling promises, and embracing accountability in our interactions with others.
