Judges 11:11

Posted on 16 December 2024
Listen to this article

“Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.”

Context:The book of Judges is set during the time of Israel’s history when they did not have a centralised government or king. Instead, God raised up judges as leaders to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors when they turned back to Him. Jephthah was one of these judges who played a significant role in delivering Israel from the Ammonites.

Appointment as Head and Captain:In this verse, we see that Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them. This indicates that the people recognised Jephthah’s leadership abilities and chose him to be their leader in their time of need. The appointment of Jephthah reveals the trust and confidence the people had in his abilities to guide them and lead them to victory.

Uttering Words before the Lord:The verse further states that Jephthah “uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh.” This suggests that Jephthah, before taking up the role of leadership, presented his plans, strategies, and commitments to the Lord in prayer. It signifies his desire to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in leading the people. Jephthah recognised the importance of seeking divine direction before making decisions that would impact the nation.

Mizpeh:Mizpeh was a significant location mentioned multiple times in the Old Testament. It served as a gathering place for various purposes, including prayer, judgment, and national assembly. By going to Mizpeh and speaking his words before the Lord, Jephthah demonstrated his commitment to seeking God’s will and guidance in his leadership.

Overall, Judges 11:11 highlights the appointment of Jephthah as the leader of Gilead and the people’s recognition of his authority. It also emphasises Jephthah’s practice of seeking God’s guidance and wisdom through prayer and presenting his plans before the Lord. As we reflect on this verse, we can learn the importance of seeking God’s will in our own lives and leadership roles, acknowledging Him as the ultimate source of wisdom and direction.
