Judges 11:23

Posted on 16 December 2024
Listen to this article

"So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?"

Context:The book of Judges is a historical account of the Israelites after they entered the Promised Land. During this time, the Israelites faced various challenges, including conflicts with neighbouring nations. Jephthah was one of the judges raised by God to deliver Israel from their enemies.

Jephthah’s Context:Jephthah was a mighty warrior from the tribe of Gilead. When the Ammonites threatened to attack Israel, the elders of Gilead called upon Jephthah to lead the army. Before going to battle, Jephthah sought assurance from the Ammonite king regarding the rightful ownership of the land.

God’s Deliverance:In Judges 11:23, Jephthah reminds the Ammonite king that the LORD God of Israel had dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel. Jephthah acknowledges that it was God who granted victory and enabled Israel to possess the land of the Amorites. He emphasises that the Ammonites, who were descendants of Lot, had no rightful claim to the land.

Lessons from Judges 11:23:

  • God’s Faithfulness:The verse highlights God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises to the Israelites. He had previously given the land of the Amorites to His people, demonstrating His covenant-keeping nature.
  • Divine Ownership:Judges 11:23 reaffirms the understanding that God is the ultimate owner of all things. The land of the Amorites belonged to Him, and He granted it to Israel as an inheritance.
  • Respect for God’s Work:Jephthah’s statement reflects the importance of acknowledging and respecting what God has done. He recognised the divine hand in dispossessing the Amorites and urged the Ammonite king to respect God’s work.
  • Reminder of God’s Sovereignty:This verse serves as a reminder of God’s sovereignty over nations and territories. He exercises His authority and determines the destinies of nations according to His divine plan.

Application:

  • Gratitude:We should cultivate an attitude of gratitude for the blessings and victories God has given us. Recognising His faithfulness in the past strengthens our trust in Him for the future.
  • Stewardship:As believers, we are stewards of the resources and blessings God has entrusted to us. We should use them wisely and in accordance with His will, acknowledging that everything ultimately belongs to Him.
  • Humility:Judges 11:23 reminds us to approach matters with humility and reverence for God’s work. We should seek His guidance and acknowledge His sovereignty in all aspects of our lives.
  • Trust in God’s Plan:Just as God had a plan for the Israelites, He has a plan for each one of us. We can trust that His purposes will be fulfilled, and we should seek His guidance and direction in our lives.

Remember, this Bible study provides an overview and application of Judges 11:23. Further study and examination of the surrounding verses and the entire book of Judges will provide a deeper understanding of the historical and theological context.
