Judges 15:15

Listen to this article

"And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith."

Context:The book of Judges records a period of Israel’s history after Joshua’s leadership, when the Israelites had settled in the Promised Land. However, they repeatedly fell into sin, worshiping false gods and abandoning the ways of the Lord. As a result, God allowed them to be oppressed by various neighbouring nations. During this time, God raised up judges to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors. Judges 15 tells the story of Samson, one of the most well-known judges.

The story of Samson:Samson was a Nazirite from birth, set apart by God for a special purpose. He possessed great physical strength, which he used to fight against the Philistines, who were oppressing the Israelites. In Judges 15, we find Samson seeking revenge against the Philistines for their mistreatment of him and his wife.

Samson’s encounter with the Philistines:In verse 15, we see that Samson found a new jawbone of a donkey. Although a seemingly unconventional choice of weapon, Samson used it to defeat a thousand Philistine men. This act of strength demonstrated God’s power working through Samson. It is important to note that Samson’s strength came from God, as long as he remained faithful to his Nazirite vow.

Symbolism of the jawbone:The choice of the jawbone as a weapon holds symbolic significance. The jawbone of an ass was an unlikely instrument of victory, emphasizing that God’s power is not limited by human expectations or conventional methods. It highlights that God can use even the most ordinary or insignificant things to accomplish His purposes. This event shows that victory is not dependent on human strength alone, but on God’s empowering presence.

Lessons from the passage:

  • Dependence on God:Samson’s strength and victory were a result of his dependence on God. As believers, we are reminded to rely on God’s strength rather than our own abilities or resources. It is in our weakness that God’s power is made perfect (2 Corinthians 12:9).
  • God’s unconventional ways:God often works in unexpected and unconventional ways. The choice of the jawbone as a weapon illustrates that God’s methods are not limited by human understanding. This should encourage us to trust in God’s wisdom and not lean solely on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • God’s faithfulness:Despite Samson’s flaws and mistakes, God remained faithful to His promise of delivering the Israelites. This highlights God’s unwavering faithfulness toward His people, even when they fall short. It reminds us that God’s faithfulness endures forever (Psalm 100:5) and encourages us to seek His forgiveness and restoration when we stumble.

Application:

  • Trust in God’s strength:When faced with challenges or opposition, we can trust in God’s strength to help us overcome. We should seek His guidance and depend on His power rather than relying on our own limited abilities.
  • Embrace God’s unconventional methods:Sometimes God’s plans may seem unusual or contrary to our expectations. We should be open to following His leading and trust that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9).
  • Seek forgiveness and restoration:Samson’s story reminds us that even when we make mistakes, God is willing to forgive and restore us. We should humbly seek His forgiveness, turn away from our sins, and embrace His grace and mercy.

Remember, as you study the Bible, it is beneficial to explore the broader context and seek additional resources such as commentaries to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the passage.
