Judges 16:10

Listen to this article

“And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound.”

Context:The book of Judges records a tumultuous period in the history of the Israelites when they repeatedly fell into idolatry and faced oppression from neighbouring nations. Judges 16 focuses on the story of Samson, one of the judges whom God raised up to deliver Israel from the Philistines.

Introduction of Delilah:In this verse, we are introduced to Delilah, a woman from the Valley of Sorek, who becomes a key figure in the story of Samson. Delilah is approached by the lords of the Philistines, who bribe her to discover the secret of Samson’s strength.

Samson’s Mockery and Deception:Delilah accuses Samson of mocking and deceiving her. It suggests that Samson had been playing with Delilah’s emotions, perhaps providing false explanations for the source of his strength in previous encounters. Delilah’s frustration and desire to know the truth intensify.

Delilah’s Request for the Source of Samson’s Strength:Delilah pleads with Samson to tell her the true source of his strength so that she can reveal it to the Philistine lords. She wants to know how to subdue and weaken him, ultimately aiding the Philistines in their attempt to capture him.

Samson’s Testimony:Throughout the subsequent verses, Samson tests Delilah three times with different explanations for the source of his strength. However, each time Delilah uses those explanations to attempt to overcome Samson, he easily breaks free, indicating that he was not telling her the truth.

Lessons from Judges 16:10:

  • Trust and deception:This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of deception and manipulation. Samson’s mockery and lies sow the seeds of mistrust and lead to dire consequences.
  • Temptation:Delilah’s persistent attempts to uncover Samson’s secret highlight the power of temptation. We should be cautious and discerning when facing repeated pressure to compromise our beliefs or divulge sensitive information.
  • Consequences of compromise:Samson’s failure to resist the allure of Delilah’s persistence ultimately leads to his downfall. It serves as a cautionary tale about the devastating consequences of compromising one’s values and giving in to temptation.
  • Overall theme:The broader theme in this passage and the subsequent events is the conflict between Samson’s divine calling as a Nazirite and his personal weaknesses, particularly his vulnerability to seductive women. This story demonstrates the consequences of disobedience, compromise, and the misuse of God-given gifts.
