Judges 16:7

Listen to this article

“And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges provides an account of the period after the Israelites settled in the Promised Land and before the establishment of the monarchy. During this time, the Israelites faced cycles of rebellion, oppression, repentance, and deliverance.

Samson’s Background:Samson was a judge of Israel, raised up by God to deliver His people from the Philistines (Judges 13:5). He possessed extraordinary strength, which was given to him by God as a result of his Nazirite vow. However, Samson struggled with personal weaknesses and often made unwise decisions.

Philistine Conspiracy:In Judges 16, Samson falls in love with a woman named Delilah, who was approached by the lords of the Philistines. They offered her a substantial sum of money if she could discover the secret of Samson’s strength, with the intention of capturing and subduing him.

The Green Withs:Delilah repeatedly questioned Samson about the source of his strength. In response, Samson tells her that if he is bound with seven green withs (freshly woven or pliable cords) that were never dried, he would become weak and lose his strength. Samson, however, was testing Delilah’s loyalty and honesty in revealing this information.

Samson’s Weakness:By suggesting the binding of fresh cords, Samson was deceiving Delilah. He knew that if she tried to bind him with those cords, he would easily break free. Samson’s strength was not derived from external factors but from his covenant relationship with God.

Symbolic Meaning:Samson’s actions can be seen as symbolic of his vulnerability to worldly temptations, particularly through relationships with women. His entanglement with Delilah ultimately leads to his downfall.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • The Dangers of Compromise:Samson’s relationship with Delilah highlights the danger of compromising one’s convictions and entering into ungodly alliances. We should be cautious of relationships or situations that may lead us away from our faith and compromise our commitment to God.
  • The Power of God’s Strength:Samson’s strength came from his relationship with God. Similarly, as believers, our strength comes from relying on God’s power and not on our own abilities. We should always seek to trust in and depend on God rather than placing our confidence in worldly things.
  • The Consequences of Disobedience:Samson’s disobedience and lack of discernment resulted in tragic consequences for himself and the nation of Israel. This reminds us of the importance of obeying God’s commands and seeking His wisdom in our choices.

In summary, Judges 16:7 highlights Samson’s interaction with Delilah, revealing his vulnerability and the temptations he faced. This passage teaches us the importance of staying faithful to God, avoiding compromise, and relying on His strength rather than our own.
