Judges 17:8

Posted on 30 December 2024
Listen to this article

“And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.”

Context: The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after the death of Joshua when the Israelites were ruled by a series of judges who were raised up by God to deliver them from their enemies. This particular verse is part of a narrative that highlights the moral and spiritual decline of the Israelites during this time.

The Setting: The verse begins by mentioning Bethlehemjudah, which was the birthplace of King David and a significant city in Israel. The story then moves to the region of Mount Ephraim, which was known to be a tribal territory of the Israelites.

Sojourning: The verse mentions that the man from Bethlehemjudah departed to sojourn (or dwell temporarily) wherever he could find a place. This suggests that there may have been a lack of stability or resources in his own city, leading him to seek a new place to live.

Micah’s House: The man arrives at the house of Micah as he journeys. Micah is later described as having set up a private shrine with household idols and an ephod, an object associated with priestly garments. This suggests that Micah was engaging in religious practices outside of the authorised worship at the tabernacle, which was the central place of worship for the Israelites.

Significance: This verse reflects the spiritual condition of the Israelites during the time of the judges. The man’s departure from Bethlehemjudah and his encounter with Micah’s unauthorised religious practices illustrate the lack of a central authority and the spiritual confusion prevailing among the people. It sets the stage for the events that follow, which include the appointment of an illegitimate priest and the idolatrous practices of the people.
