Judges 20:11

Posted on 31 December 2024
Listen to this article

“But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.”

Context:The book of Judges is set during the time after the Israelites settled in the Promised Land but before the establishment of the monarchy. It describes a period of recurring cycles of apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In Judges 20, we find a story of a grave incident involving the tribe of Benjamin.

The Background:The chapter begins with a horrifying incident involving a Levite’s concubine who was raped and killed by a group of wicked men from the tribe of Benjamin. Outraged by this act, the other tribes of Israel gathered together at Mizpah to seek justice and to determine how to deal with the Benjamites.

The Gathering of the Benjamites:Judges 20:11 describes the response of the tribe of Benjamin to the situation. They gathered themselves together out of their cities and assembled at Gibeah, their main city, in preparation for a battle against the rest of the Israelites. This verse sets the stage for the conflict that unfolds in the following chapters.

The Battle:The gathering of the Benjamites at Gibeah marks the beginning of a violent confrontation between the tribe of Benjamin and the other tribes of Israel. The ensuing battle is described in detail in the subsequent verses of Judges 20.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Consequences of Sin:The incident that led to this conflict demonstrates the tragic consequences of sin and lawlessness. The wickedness of a few individuals within the tribe of Benjamin resulted in a destructive chain of events that caused division and bloodshed among the Israelite community.
  • The Importance of Justice:The response of the other tribes in seeking justice reveals the significance of upholding righteousness and seeking resolution when injustice occurs. They gather together to address the wrongdoing and ensure that justice is served.
  • Unity and Division:The events in Judges 20 highlight the importance of unity within the community of believers. The division caused by the actions of the tribe of Benjamin led to a devastating internal conflict among God’s chosen people.
  • Consequences of Disobedience:Throughout the book of Judges, we see a pattern of the Israelites turning away from God and experiencing the consequences of their disobedience. The conflict described in this chapter is another example of the consequences of Israel’s spiritual decline.
  • Overall, Judges 20:11 serves as a pivotal verse in the narrative, introducing the gathering of the Benjamites and setting the stage for the intense battle that unfolds. It also presents valuable lessons about the consequences of sin, the importance of justice, the impact of unity, and the consequences of disobedience.
