Judges 20:18

Listen to this article

“And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.”

Historical Context:The Book of Judges is set during a period of Israel’s history after they had entered the Promised Land but before the establishment of the monarchy. It was a time characterised by a cycle of apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In Judges 20, the tribes of Israel are gathered together to respond to the heinous crime committed by some of the men from the tribe of Benjamin against a Levite’s concubine.

Seeking God’s Counsel:In the midst of the tension and conflict, the children of Israel recognised the need to seek God’s counsel. They understood the importance of seeking divine guidance before engaging in battle. They went up to the house of God, which is likely referring to the tabernacle, the central place of worship and the symbol of God’s presence among them.

Asking for Direction:The Israelites sought the Lord’s counsel by asking, “Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin?” This demonstrates their recognition that victory and success depended on following God’s plan and guidance. They acknowledged their reliance on God’s wisdom rather than relying solely on their own strategies or human strength.

Divine Response:In response to their inquiry, the Lord answered, “Judah shall go up first.” The tribe of Judah was designated by God to lead the way into battle. This choice was significant, as Judah was the tribe from which King David and the Davidic dynasty would eventually arise.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Seeking God’s counsel:The passage emphasises the importance of seeking God’s counsel before making important decisions or engaging in significant endeavours. Just as the Israelites sought God’s guidance, we should also seek His wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking advice from godly mentors.
  • Reliance on God:The Israelites recognised their dependence on God’s direction and intervention in their battles. Similarly, we should acknowledge our need for God’s help in every aspect of our lives and trust in His providence.
  • Leadership and unity:God’s choice of Judah as the tribe to go up first highlights the significance of leadership within the community of believers. It also emphasises the importance of unity and coordination among God’s people, working together to accomplish His purposes.

In conclusion, Judges 20:18 presents a pivotal moment in Israel’s history, emphasising the importance of seeking God’s counsel, relying on His guidance, and demonstrating unity within the community of believers.
