Posted on 31 December 2024
Listen to this article

“And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.”

Context:The book of Judges records the period of Israel’s history after the death of Joshua when the Israelites were led by a series of judges. During this time, Israel went through cycles of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 20 is part of a narrative about a grievous crime committed in the city of Gibeah, which led to a war between the tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin.

Background:The verse mentions a Levite who was the husband of a woman who was killed. This Levite and his concubine had traveled to Gibeah, a city belonging to the tribe of Benjamin.

The Levite’s response:In response to the assembly of Israel gathered to seek justice for the woman’s death, the Levite speaks up. He explains that he and his concubine had entered Gibeah to find lodging for the night. However, while they were in the city, wicked men from the city surrounded their lodging place, intending to sexually abuse the Levite. Tragically, the concubine was taken and abused all night, resulting in her death.

The Levite’s purpose:The Levite’s purpose in recounting this incident was to seek justice for the crime committed against his wife. His testimony highlights the horrific nature of the crime and the need for the assembly to take action.

The broader story:The incident in Judges 20:4 serves as the catalyst for a larger conflict between the other tribes of Israel and the tribe of Benjamin. The crime committed in Gibeah reveals the moral corruption within the tribe of Benjamin, which refuses to hand over the criminals for judgment. As a result, the other tribes unite to punish the Benjamites, resulting in a civil war within Israel.

Lessons from the passage:Judges 20:4 illustrates the consequences of unchecked wickedness and the importance of seeking justice. It exposes the tragic consequences of moral decay and the need for righteous leadership. The passage also emphasizes the significance of standing up against evil and defending the vulnerable.

Application:As we reflect on this passage, we are reminded of the importance of upholding justice and righteousness in our own lives. We should not turn a blind eye to wickedness but take a stand against it. It is crucial to advocate for those who are oppressed and seek justice for the wrongs committed against them.

Overall, Judges 20:4 portrays a dark episode in Israel’s history, highlighting the moral decay and the need for justice. It prompts us to examine our own commitment to righteousness and justice in the face of wickedness.
