Judges 20:7

Posted on 31 December 2024
Listen to this article

“Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.”

Context: The book of Judges recounts the period after Joshua’s leadership, when Israel was governed by a series of judges. During this time, the Israelites often turned away from God and faced the consequences of their disobedience. Judges 20 describes a tragic incident involving the tribe of Benjamin, which resulted a civil war within Israel.

Unity of Israel: In this verse, the phrase “ye are all children of Israel” emphasizes the unity of the twelve tribes of Israel. The tribes were called to assemble together to address a grave situation. Despite their differences, they were reminded of their common identity as the chosen people of God.

Seeking Advice and Counsel: The Israelites understood the importance of seeking advice and counsel from one another. The phrase “give here your advice and counsel” indicates their willingness to come together and collectively make decisions. Seeking the opinions of others can provide valuable insights and help in making wise choices.

Community and Decision-Making: The Israelites recognized that important decisions should not be made by individuals alone but required the involvement of the entire community. This principle promotes unity, ensures fairness, and allows for a broader perspective. By involving everyone, they aimed to achieve a consensus and promote collective responsibility.

Importance of Wisdom: Seeking advice and counsel highlights the significance of wisdom in decision‑making. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors, there is safety.” The Israelites acknowledged their need for divine guidance and the wisdom of their fellow Israelites to navigate through challenging situations.

Application: This verse encourages us to recognize the importance of seeking advice and counsel from trusted individuals when facing difficult decisions or situations. We should value the wisdom and perspectives of others, especially those who share our faith and have experience in the relevant areas. Additionally, it reminds us of the strength found in unity and the power of collective decision‑making.

In conclusion, Judges 20:7 highlights the unity of the Israelites as children of Israel and their willingness to seek advice and counsel from one another. It teaches us the value of community, the importance of wisdom, and the significance of involving others in decision‑making.
