Judges 4:21

Listen to this article

"Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died."

Context:The book of Judges is set in the period after Joshua’s death when the Israelites had settled in the Promised Land but were constantly falling into sin and idolatry. God raised up judges to deliver and lead the people. In Judges 4, we read about the oppression of the Israelites by Jabin, the king of Canaan, and how Deborah, a prophetess and judge, called upon Barak to lead the Israelite army against their oppressors.

Introduction of Jael:Jael is a significant character in the story of Deborah and Barak. She was the wife of Heber, a Kenite, who was not an Israelite but lived in friendly terms with Jabin’s forces. Jael plays a pivotal role in the defeat of Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army.

The account of Jael’s actions:In verse 21, we see Jael taking decisive action against Sisera. While Sisera was fleeing the battlefield after his army had been defeated by Barak and the Israelites, he sought refuge in the tent of Jael. Jael seized the opportunity and took a nail and a hammer. With stealth, she approached Sisera, who was fast asleep and weary, and drove the nail into his temples, killing him.

Jael’s act of bravery:Jael’s action can be seen as an act of courage and loyalty to her people. By killing Sisera, she played a vital role in ensuring the victory of the Israelites over their oppressors. Her actions ultimately fulfilled Deborah’s prophecy that Sisera would be delivered into the hand of a woman (Judges 4:9).

Divine intervention and fulfillment of prophecy:Although Jael’s actions might appear violent, it is important to note that her actions were part of God’s plan to bring deliverance to His people. Deborah, as a prophetess, had already foretold that Sisera would be defeated by a woman. Jael’s act was a fulfillment of this prophecy, highlighting God’s sovereignty and His use of unexpected means to accomplish His purposes.

Lessons and application:

  • God uses unlikely individuals:Jael was not a soldier or a leader, yet God used her in a significant way. This teaches us that God can use anyone, regardless of their background or status, to accomplish His purposes.
  • Courage in difficult situations:Jael’s bravery and decisive action teach us the importance of courage when faced with challenging circumstances. She demonstrated the courage to act in the face of danger and oppression.
  • Fulfillment of God’s promises:Jael’s actions fulfilled Deborah’s prophecy. This reminds us of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and His sovereignty over all situations.
