Listen to this article

“Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.”

Historical context:The book of Judges recounts a period of Israel’s history after the death of Joshua, when the Israelites were ruled by judges. These judges were raised up by God to deliver His people from oppression by their enemies. Judges 5 is known as the Song of Deborah, a song of victory celebrating the deliverance of Israel from the Canaanite king Jabin and his commander Sisera.

The role of the judges:In verse 10, Deborah, the prophetess and judge, calls upon various groups of people to join in the celebration. She specifically addresses those who ride on white asses (donkeys) and sit in judgment, as well as those who walk by the way. This refers to the leaders and officials of Israel, both civil and military, who were responsible for maintaining order, dispensing justice, and ensuring the well‑being of the people.

Symbolism of riding on white asses:Riding on white asses symbolises authority, dignity, and prosperity. White asses were considered a noble mode of transportation in biblical times. By calling upon those who ride on white asses, Deborah emphasises the importance of leadership and the responsibility of those in positions of authority to uphold justice and righteousness.

Sitting in judgment:The phrase “ye that sit in judgment” refers to judges and officials who were responsible for settling legal disputes and rendering just decisions. This verse highlights the significance of impartial and righteous judgment in maintaining a just society. The judges were to uphold the law and ensure fairness and equality for all people.

Walking by the way:Deborah also calls upon those who walk by the way to join in the celebration. This likely refers to the ordinary people, travellers, and those going about their daily lives. It represents the entire community and emphasises the unity of the people in acknowledging God’s deliverance.

Application:Judges 5:10 reminds us of the importance of leadership and justice in society. It encourages leaders to exercise their authority with wisdom, fairness, and integrity. It also reminds us of the responsibility of each individual to contribute to the well‑being of the community and to support just governance. This verse serves as a reminder that justice and righteousness are crucial for a harmonious and prosperous society. Overall, Judges 5:10 highlights the roles and responsibilities of leaders and the importance of justice and righteousness in society. It serves as a call to both leaders and individuals to fulfil their respective roles in upholding justice and contributing to the well‑being of the community.
