Judges 5:13

Listen to this article

“Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.”

Historical Context: Judges 5:13 is part of the Song of Deborah and Barak, which is a poetic celebration of the victory of the Israelites over the Canaanite forces led by Sisera. Deborah was a prophetess and judge in Israel, and Barak was the military commander chosen by God to lead the Israelite army against the Canaanites. This victory marked a significant turning point in Israel’s history.

Divine Intervention: In this verse, Deborah proclaims that the Lord granted her dominion over the mighty. It emphasises that the victory they achieved was not solely due to human strength or strategy but was a result of God’s intervention and empowerment. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness to His people and His willingness to come to their aid in times of need.

God’s Choice: Deborah highlights that it was God who granted her authority and dominion over the nobles and mighty individuals. It reminds us that God chooses and raises up leaders according to His purposes. Deborah was a woman of great faith and obedience to God, and He chose her to lead His people in a critical time of need. This verse challenges the traditional societal norms of the time and shows that God can use anyone, regardless of gender or social status, to fulfil His plans.

God’s Empowerment: Deborah’s acknowledgment of God’s intervention reminds us that it is God who equips and empowers His chosen servants. Despite any human limitations or weaknesses, when God calls someone to a task, He provides the necessary abilities and resources to fulfil that calling. Deborah’s leadership and victory over the mighty were not achieved in her own strength but through the empowerment of the Lord.

Application: Trust in God’s power: Just as Deborah trusted in God’s power to grant her dominion over the mighty, we should place our trust in God’s strength and seek His guidance in our lives. God is able to give us victory over any challenges we face. Obedience and submission to God: Deborah’s obedience to God’s call led to her being used mightily by Him. We should strive to be obedient to God’s commands and submit to His will, recognising that He knows what is best for us. Embrace God’s choices: God’s selection of Deborah, a woman, as a leader challenges cultural norms. It reminds us to value and respect all individuals, irrespective of their gender, and to embrace the diverse ways in which God can work through His people.
