Listen to this article

“Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.”

Context: The book of Judges is set in a time when the Israelites were in a cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 5 is known as the Song of Deborah, a poetic celebration of Israel’s victory over their enemies under the leadership of Deborah and Barak.

Ephraim, Benjamin, Machir, and Zebulun: These are the tribes of Israel mentioned in the verse. Each tribe played a role in the battle against their enemies.

Ephraim: Ephraim was a significant tribe in Israel. In this verse, Ephraim is described as a “root of them against Amalek.” This suggests that Ephraim played a crucial role in opposing the Amalekites, who were enemies of Israel. It highlights the courage and valor of the Ephraimites in the battle.

Benjamin: Benjamin, another tribe of Israel, is mentioned next. The verse says, “after thee, Benjamin, among thy people.” This indicates that Benjamin joined the fight against the enemy. The phrase “among thy people” suggests that Benjamin fought alongside other tribes, united in their common cause.

Machir: Machir is a clan within the tribe of Manasseh, and they are mentioned as the ones who “came down governors.” The word “governors” implies leadership or prominent figures. This suggests that Machir provided capable leaders or commanders for the battle, who played a significant role in the victory.

Zebulun: Zebulun is another tribe of Israel, and the verse mentions that they were the ones who “handle the pen of the writer.” This implies that Zebulun had skilled scribes or writers who recorded and preserved the events of the battle and other important matters. It highlights the importance of documentation and the role of Zebulun in this regard.

Overall significance: Judges 5:14 showcases the collaborative effort of different tribes and clans in the battle against the enemies of Israel. It emphasizes the unity and cooperation required for victory. The verse also highlights the bravery of Ephraim, the participation of Benjamin, the leadership of Machir, and the role of Zebulun in recording and preserving Israel’s history.
