Judges 5:16

Listen to this article

“Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.”

Judges 5:16 is part of the Song of Deborah, a poetic celebration of Israel’s victory over their oppressors, the Canaanites. Deborah was a prophetess and judge of Israel, and she composed this song with Barak after their triumph in battle.

Historical Background:The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history when they were governed by judges-temporary leaders who rose up to deliver the Israelites from their enemies. During this time, the Israelites fell into cycles of apostasy, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In Judges 4, we learn about the oppressive rule of Jabin, the king of Canaan, and his commander Sisera. Deborah, a judge and prophetess, called Barak to lead the Israelite army against the Canaanites.

Sheepfolds and Bleatings:The opening line of Judges 5:16 asks, “Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks?” This metaphorical question refers to the tribe of Reuben, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The tribe of Reuben, instead of joining the battle against the Canaanites, chose to stay behind with their flocks. The sheepfolds symbolize a place of comfort, security, and complacency. Rather than taking part in the important task of fighting for the freedom of their people, the tribe of Reuben remained in their safe spaces, detached from the conflict.

Great Searchings of Heart:The second part of the verse says, “For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.” This phrase implies that among the Reubenites, there were internal debates and indecision. While some may have felt a sense of duty to join the battle, others struggled with hesitation, doubts, or conflicting priorities. The phrase “great searchings of heart” indicates a deep introspection and internal conflict within the tribe of Reuben, which likely contributed to their decision to remain on the sidelines.

Lessons and Application:

  • Complacency and Comfort Zones:The verse challenges us to examine our own lives and consider if we are dwelling in our own “sheepfolds.” It is easy to become complacent and comfortable in our routines, avoiding stepping out of our comfort zones to face challenges or engage in meaningful work. God often calls us to step out in faith, even when it may be uncomfortable or inconvenient.
  • Discerning God’s Call:The internal debates and searchings of heart among the Reubenites highlight the importance of discerning God’s calling in our lives. When faced with decisions, it is crucial to seek God’s guidance and align our priorities with His will. Indecision and internal conflicts can hinder our ability to serve God and fulfill our purpose.
  • Active Participation:The verse encourages us to actively engage in God’s work and participate in the battles that arise in our lives. We should not shrink back from challenges or neglect our responsibilities. Instead, we should courageously step forward, trusting in God’s strength and provision.
  • Unity and Cooperation:Judges 5:16 also underscores the significance of unity within the community of believers. The division among the Reubenites weakened their collective strength and hindered their impact. In our own lives, we should strive for unity, support one another, and work together to accomplish God’s purposes.
