Judges 6:12

Listen to this article

“And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valor.”

Context:The book of Judges records the period of time after the Israelites settled in the Promised Land, following the death of Joshua. During this time, the Israelites went through a cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. In Judges 6, the Israelites were being oppressed by the Midianites because of their disobedience to God.

The appearance of the angel:In this verse, the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, who would later become a judge and deliverer of Israel. It is important to note that the angel of the Lord is often considered a manifestation of God Himself. This divine encounter signifies God’s direct involvement and intervention in the affairs of His people.

The affirmation of God’s presence:The angel’s message to Gideon begins with the affirmation, “The Lord is with thee.” Despite the difficult circumstances and the oppression of the Midianites, God reassures Gideon of His presence. This statement carries great significance, as it reminds Gideon that he is not alone in his struggle. The assurance of God’s presence brings comfort, strength, and encouragement.

Gideon’s identity:The angel refers to Gideon as a “mighty man of valor.” At this point, Gideon might have felt weak, inadequate, and overwhelmed by the challenges he faced. However, God saw the potential within Gideon and called him a mighty man of valor. God saw beyond Gideon’s present circumstances and weaknesses, and recognized his future role as a leader and deliverer.

Lessons for us:

  • God’s presence:Just as God assured Gideon of His presence, we can take comfort in knowing that God is always with us. In the midst of trials, challenges, and uncertainties, we can find strength and encouragement in the fact that God is by our side.
  • God sees our potential:Like Gideon, we may feel inadequate and unworthy of the tasks before us. But God sees beyond our limitations and weaknesses. He knows our potential and equips us for the work He has called us to do.
  • Encouragement in our identity:Gideon’s identity was affirmed by God. Likewise, as believers, our identity is found in Christ. We are called children of God, chosen and loved by Him. When we understand our identity in Christ, it empowers us to live with confidence and fulfill our purpose.

Judges 6:12 reminds us of God’s presence in our lives, His ability to see our potential, and the assurance of our identity in Him. This verse encourages us to trust in God’s presence, embrace our calling, and find strength in Him as we navigate the challenges of life.
