Judges 6:15

Posted on 24 November 2024
Listen to this article

“And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

Historical Context:The book of Judges covers a period in Israel’s history after the death of Joshua, when the Israelites were settled in the Promised Land but faced a cycle of disobedience, oppression, and deliverance. In this particular chapter, the Israelites had again turned away from God, and as a result, they were oppressed by the Midianites.

The Caller:The passage refers to a man whom God called to be a deliverer of Israel. His name is Gideon, from the tribe of Manasseh. Gideon was in a humble state, both in terms of his family’s status and his own perceived insignificance. His response to God’s call reflects his sense of inadequacy for the task at hand.

Gideon’s Question:Gideon’s initial response to God’s call reveals his doubt and uncertainty. He questions how he, with limited resources and coming from a poor family in Manasseh, could possibly be the instrument of God’s salvation for Israel. Gideon feels inadequate, both in terms of his family’s social standing and his personal abilities.

God’s Response:Despite Gideon’s self-doubt, God assures him of His presence and power. In the subsequent verses, God reassures Gideon that He will be with him, and Gideon will defeat the Midianites. God looks beyond Gideon’s perceived limitations and chooses him for a significant role in the deliverance of Israel.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God uses ordinary people:Gideon’s story reminds us that God often chooses individuals who may seem insignificant or unqualified by worldly standards. He looks at the heart and uses those who are willing to trust and obey Him, regardless of their circumstances.
  • God’s strength in our weakness:Gideon’s acknowledgment of his limitations highlights an important spiritual truth. When we recognize our weaknesses and rely on God’s strength, He can work mightily through us. God often uses our weaknesses to display His power and bring glory to His name.
  • Trusting God’s calling:Gideon’s initial doubts are relatable, as many of us may question our abilities when faced with daunting tasks or responsibilities. However, as we trust in God’s calling and depend on His guidance, He equips and empowers us to fulfill His purposes.
  • God’s presence and assurance:God’s response to Gideon emphasizes His faithfulness and promise to be with His chosen servants. When we step out in obedience to God’s call, we can have confidence in His presence and the assurance that He will enable us to accomplish what He has called us to do.

In Judges 6:15, we see Gideon’s initial doubt and uncertainty, but it sets the stage for God’s transformative work in his life. Through the story of Gideon, we are encouraged to trust in God’s strength, embrace His calling, and rely on His faithfulness in all circumstances.
